KATHMANDU, OCT 03 -
The first Japanese satellite signal receiving station for South Asia region was inaugurated on the premises of International Center for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD) in the Capital on Sunday. The satellite signal receiving station with high speed communication link will receive data from satellite systems in Japan, India, Thailand, Taiwan and South Korea to guide response efforts in emergency situations like floods and where the communication infrastructure is poor.

New receiving station inaugurated today
At 12:40 on October 3, 2010, the new JAXA WINDS (Wide-band Internetworking Engineering Test and Demonstration Satellites 'KIZUNA') receiving station at ICIMOD will be inaugurated. The ribbon cutting-ceremony will be attended by Shinichi Mizumoto, Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA), Japan, José Achache, Executive Director, Group on Earth Observations (GEO) and Andreas Schild, Director General of ICIMOD, along with the participants of the pre-symposium workshop on "Space-based information for disaster preparedness and risk management" held on October 2-3 at ICIMOD, Kathmandu.WINDS is a super high-speed internet satellite for emergency response. Real-time disaster monitoring by JAXA
Kathmandu, Nepal: A team of Japanese scientists has installed a receiver that will directly provide real time satellite imagery when natural disasters occur in the country. The receiver was installed on the premises of International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD) in Khumaltar of Lalitpur, Nepal.
The team led by Shinya Tanaka, senior engineer at Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) installed the receiver. “This satellite receiver will provide direct real time satellite imageries of disaster afflicted areas directly which would help in rapid response mapping and monitoring of major disasters,” said Dr Giriraj Amarnath, remote sensing specialist at ICIMOD.
